Whiskey Sour (Rye)
The rye whiskey sour predates the bourbon version and showcases how rye's peppery spice cuts through citrus and sweetness. With an optional egg white, it becomes a velvety classic.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Rye whiskey
- 0.8 oz Fresh lemon juice
- 0.8 oz Simple syrup
- 0.5 oz Egg white (optional)
- lemon wheel (garnish) garnish
- brandied cherry (garnish) garnish
Pairs With
Serve with spicy Asian cuisine like Thai red curry or Korean beef bulgogi to leverage rye's peppery notes cutting through the citrus and sweetness. The cocktail's brightness also complements fresh oysters on the half shell.
Instructions
If using egg white, combine all ingredients in a shaker and dry shake vigorously without ice for 10 seconds
Add ice to the shaker and shake hard for 15 seconds
Strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass
Garnish with a lemon wheel and a brandied cherry
Tips
The egg white is optional but transforms the texture into something silky and luxurious with a beautiful foam cap Rye whiskey makes a more balanced, less sweet sour than bourbon — the spice keeps the drink from becoming cloying Add 2-3 drops of Angostura bitters on top of the foam and drag a toothpick through them for a classic decorative pattern
