Rye Old Fashioned
The Old Fashioned made the way it was originally intended — with rye whiskey. The spicier, drier character of rye creates a more structured and less sweet version of the ultimate classic cocktail.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Rye whiskey
- 0.3 oz Simple syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 dash Orange bitters
- orange peel (garnish) garnish
- luxardo cherry (garnish) garnish
Pairs With
Serve with smoked brisket or rich pâté to complement the Rye Old Fashioned's spiciness and subtle sweetness from the sugar cube. The cocktail's dry character pairs exceptionally well with charcuterie boards.
Instructions
Add simple syrup and both bitters to a rocks glass
Stir briefly to combine the syrup and bitters
Add one large ice cube or ice sphere to the glass
Pour rye whiskey over the ice
Stir gently for 20 seconds to chill and integrate
Express an orange peel over the drink, then drop it in alongside a luxardo cherry
Tips
Rye's natural spice and dryness mean you may want slightly more syrup than you would use with bourbon — adjust to taste Try using demerara syrup instead of simple syrup to add a richer, more caramel-like depth to complement the rye A single large ice cube is essential — it melts slowly and keeps the drink balanced from first sip to last
