Reverse Manhattan
A clever inversion of the classic Manhattan that flips the ratio to make vermouth the star. More vermouth than whiskey creates a lower-proof, wine-forward sipper with surprising depth.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Sweet vermouth
- 1 oz Rye whiskey
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 dash Orange bitters
- orange twist (garnish) garnish
Pairs With
Pair with slow-cooked beef, duck confit, or aged gouda to let the vermouth shine as the drink's focal point. The higher vermouth ratio needs substantial, savory food to maintain balance.
Instructions
Combine sweet vermouth, rye whiskey, and both bitters in a mixing glass
Fill with ice and stir for 25 seconds until well-chilled
Strain into a chilled coupe glass
Express an orange twist over the drink and rest it on the rim
Serve immediately
Tips
Vermouth quality matters even more here since it is the dominant ingredient; reach for Carpano Antica, Punt e Mes, or Cocchi di Torino This is an excellent low-proof option for early evening drinking or when you want to pace yourself Try substituting bourbon for the rye to create a softer, sweeter variation
