Paper Plane
A modern classic from Sam Ross, created in 2007 with equal parts of four ingredients. Perfectly balanced between bitter, sweet, sour, and herbal, this is the cocktail that launched a thousand menus.
Ingredients
- 0.8 oz Bourbon
- 0.8 oz Aperol
- 0.8 oz Amaro Nonino Quintessentia
- 0.8 oz Fresh lemon juice
- lemon peel twist (garnish) garnish
Pairs With
Pair with Vietnamese or Asian cuisine featuring fresh herbs and subtle bitterness—think bitter melon dishes, herbal salads, or Vietnamese spring rolls. Also excellent with dark chocolate and charcuterie boards featuring aged cheddar and prosciutto.
Instructions
Combine bourbon, Aperol, Amaro Nonino, and fresh lemon juice in a cocktail shaker
Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 12 to 15 seconds
Double strain through a fine mesh strainer into a chilled coupe glass
Express a lemon peel over the surface and discard or rest on the rim
Serve immediately while it is ice cold
Tips
Equal parts is non-negotiable here — the balance of this drink depends on the precise 0.75 oz ratio of each ingredient If you cannot find Amaro Nonino, Montenegro is a reasonable substitute though the drink will be slightly less complex Double straining is essential for the clean, elegant presentation this cocktail deserves
