Oaxaca Old Fashioned
Created by Phil Ward at Death & Co in 2007, this modern classic splits tequila and mezcal over a base of agave syrup and mole bitters. It has become the gateway cocktail for mezcal newcomers worldwide.
Ingredients
- 1.5 oz Reposado tequila
- 0.5 oz Mezcal
- 0.3 oz Agave nectar
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 dash Mole bitters (or chocolate bitters)
- flamed orange peel (garnish) garnish
Pairs With
Enjoy with chile-spiced grilled vegetables, barbecued brisket, or quesadillas with charred cheese. The agave syrup and dual mezcal-tequila base pairs beautifully with smoky, spiced, and toasted flavors.
Instructions
Combine reposado tequila, mezcal, agave nectar, and both bitters in a mixing glass
Add ice and stir for 30 seconds until well-chilled
Strain over one large ice cube in a rocks glass
Hold a match or lighter to an orange peel and express the oils through the flame over the drink
Drop the charred orange peel into the glass
Tips
The flamed orange peel is not just for show — the caramelized citrus oils add a toasted, bittersweet aroma that ties the drink together If you cannot find mole bitters, Angostura or chocolate bitters are a fine substitute This drink works best with a joven or espadín mezcal that has moderate smoke rather than an intensely smoky variety
