New York Sour
A classic bourbon sour crowned with a dramatic float of dry red wine. The wine adds color, tannin, and fruity depth, making this one of the most visually striking cocktails in the canon.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Bourbon
- 1 oz Fresh lemon juice
- 0.8 oz Simple syrup
- 0.5 oz Dry red wine (Malbec or Shiraz)
- 0.5 oz Egg white (optional)
- lemon wheel (garnish) garnish
- brandied cherry (garnish) garnish
Pairs With
Pair with grilled steak or beef tartare to complement the bourbon's richness and the wine float's tannic structure. The drink's citrus brightness cuts through fatty meats beautifully.
Instructions
If using egg white, add all ingredients except wine to a shaker and dry shake without ice for 10 seconds
Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for 15 seconds
Strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass
Slowly float the red wine over the back of a bar spoon so it rests on top of the drink
Garnish with a lemon wheel and a brandied cherry
Tips
A medium-bodied, fruit-forward red wine like Malbec or Shiraz works best for the float The egg white is optional but adds a silky foam layer that makes the wine float even more dramatic Pour the wine float very slowly and patiently — rushing it will break through the surface and muddy the layers
