Negroni
The iconic Italian aperitivo and arguably the most famous Campari cocktail in the world. Equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth create a perfectly balanced bitter-sweet masterpiece.
Ingredients
- 1 oz Campari
- 1 oz Gin (London Dry)
- 1 oz Sweet vermouth
- orange peel twist (garnish) garnish
Pairs With
Serve with classic Italian antipasti—cured meats, aged cheeses, and olives—or salty-umami dishes like risotto with mushrooms or pasta carbonara. The Negroni's bitterness and herbal complexity cuts through rich fats beautifully.
Instructions
Add Campari, gin, and sweet vermouth to a mixing glass filled with ice
Stir slowly and steadily for 30 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted
Strain over a single large ice cube in a rocks glass
Express an orange peel over the surface of the drink by squeezing it skin-side down
Drop the orange peel twist into the glass
Tips
Equal parts is traditional, but many bartenders prefer a slightly gin-forward ratio of 1.25 oz gin to 1 oz each Campari and vermouth Carpano Antica Formula or Cocchi di Torino are excellent sweet vermouth choices that stand up to the Campari Stir rather than shake — a Negroni should be silky, not cloudy or overly diluted
