Mezcal Negroni
A brooding, smoke-kissed riff on the Italian classic. Mezcal steps in for gin, and its earthy complexity against Campari's bitterness and sweet vermouth creates a cocktail that feels ancient and modern at the same time.
Ingredients
- 1.5 oz Mezcal
- 1 oz Campari
- 1 oz Sweet vermouth
- orange peel twist (garnish) garnish
Pairs With
Complement with bitter greens salad with aged cheese, wood-fired pizza with intense toppings, or roasted bitter vegetables. The Campari-mezcal interplay demands equally assertive, complex food.
Instructions
Add mezcal, Campari, and sweet vermouth to a mixing glass filled with ice
Stir steadily for 30 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted
Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube
Express an orange peel over the surface of the drink
Drop the orange peel twist into the glass
Tips
A slightly smoky espadÃn mezcal pairs better with Campari than a heavily smoky variety, which can clash with the bitterness Use Carpano Antica or Cocchi di Torino for a richer, more complex sweet vermouth component If Campari feels too aggressive, try splitting it half-and-half with Aperol for a gentler bitterness
