Hanky Panky
Created by Ada Coleman at the Savoy Hotel's American Bar around 1903, this gin and sweet vermouth cocktail gets its distinctive character from a small measure of Fernet-Branca. Bold, herbal, and unforgettable.
Ingredients
- 1.5 oz London dry gin
- 1.5 oz Sweet vermouth
- 0.3 oz Fernet-Branca
- orange peel twist (garnish) garnish
Pairs With
Pair with Italian antipasti featuring prosciutto, aged cheeses, and marinated vegetables to complement the vermouth's herbal complexity. The drink's botanical notes work beautifully with charcuterie boards and creamy cheeses like burrata or taleggio.
Instructions
Combine gin, sweet vermouth, and Fernet-Branca in a mixing glass
Fill with ice and stir for 30 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted
Strain into a chilled coupe glass
Express an orange peel over the surface of the drink
Drop the twist into the glass and serve immediately
Tips
The Fernet-Branca is the secret weapon here; do not substitute with other amari, as its menthol and herb profile is essential A quarter ounce of Fernet may seem small, but it is intensely flavored and will dominate if you pour too heavily Ada Coleman was one of the first female head bartenders in history, and this cocktail is her lasting legacy
