Cognac Old Fashioned
The timeless Old Fashioned template reimagined with cognac at its core. Warm baking spice, dried fruit notes, and a touch of sweetness make this a refined and contemplative sipper.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Cognac (VSOP recommended)
- 0.3 oz Demerara syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 dash Orange bitters
- orange peel (garnish) garnish
- brandied cherry (garnish) garnish
Pairs With
Pair with seared duck breast or beef carpaccio to complement the cognac's warmth and the drink's sophisticated spice notes. The rich umami and subtle sweetness of these dishes enhance the Old Fashioned's depth.
Instructions
Add demerara syrup, Angostura bitters, and orange bitters to a rocks glass
Stir briefly to combine the syrup and bitters
Add one large ice cube or ice sphere to the glass
Pour cognac over the ice and stir gently for 20-25 seconds
Express an orange peel over the drink by squeezing it skin-side down, then drop it in along with a brandied cherry
Tips
Demerara syrup complements cognac better than white simple syrup; its caramel and molasses notes enhance the brandy's natural richness A VSOP cognac hits the sweet spot for this drink; VS can be thin while XO is wasted under bitters and sugar Let the drink rest for 30 seconds after stirring to allow the flavors to fully integrate before the first sip
