Blood and Sand
A striking prohibition-era cocktail named after the 1922 Rudolph Valentino film. Equal parts scotch, cherry liqueur, sweet vermouth, and orange juice create a surprisingly balanced and fruity drink.
Ingredients
- 0.8 oz Blended scotch whisky
- 0.8 oz Cherry Heering
- 0.8 oz Sweet vermouth
- 0.8 oz Fresh orange juice
- orange peel (garnish) garnish
- brandied cherry (garnish) garnish
Pairs With
Pair with cherry-glazed duck, chocolate-covered cherry desserts, or a charcuterie board with dark meats to complement the drink's rich cherry liqueur and scotch complexity.
Instructions
Combine scotch, Cherry Heering, sweet vermouth, and fresh orange juice in a shaker
Fill shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 12 seconds
Double strain through a fine mesh strainer into a chilled coupe glass
Express an orange peel over the surface of the drink
Garnish with the orange peel and a brandied cherry
Tips
Fresh-squeezed orange juice makes a noticeable difference; avoid carton juice for this recipe Cherry Heering is the traditional cherry liqueur and cannot be substituted with maraschino liqueur without changing the character entirely Double straining removes ice chips and pulp for a clean, elegant presentation
